Parental involvement and educational success among vulnerable students in vocational education and training

Background Parental involvement is positively associated with students’ educational success. However, research shows that levels of and participation vary considerably, depending on parents’ social economic resources. Understanding more about the kinds matter to students themselves important, as it may help determine how best support those from less advantageous backgrounds.Purpose The aim this study was investigate which forms parental in upper secondary education (age 16–18) who were defined vulnerable highlight important for their achievement at school.Method based analysis semi-structured interviews 25 second year vocational training (VET) Norway. Based grades, identified being risk not completing education. majority had an immigrant background came families low socioeconomic transcribed analysed using a reflexive thematic approach.Findings acknowledged different major explanation success school. Five themes by analysis: psychological support, supervision schoolwork, practical high expectations aspirations, obligation gratitude towards parents. narratives reveal practices are restricted parents hold higher or familiar system. In addition, also reflected need encouragement motivation, everyday school life, appreciation clearly expressed regarding education.Conclusions findings contribute field describing specific eyes vulnerable.
